Duct Tape Dress III

Description

This is made out of duct tape just like all of my art. I was asked by my work, Duck Brand Duct Tape, if I would make a dress for them to wear to New York to promote The Stuck At Prom Scholarship contest. I came up with a few designs and they liked this one the best although the original design for the dress was strapless but the bottom ended up being too heavy and risked falling off of the model so I had to add straps. The entire making of the dress was filmed and I'm not sure what the really plan on dong with it.

The photos of the dress were taken at about 2-3am in my backyard which happens to have an excess of apple, peach, and pear trees. I felt really bad for the model since it took about 30 minutes for me to lace her in and out of the dress.

Let me first say that the design of this dress is classic-fantastic. It has a sophisticated, evening gown feel that is just what you would want in a formal dress such as for a prom. The ruffle at the top and bottom of the purple layer are also extremely well done - with your medium being something that is generally designed to be rigid, having this sort of soft shape is quite a feat.

With that said, I do have a minor complaint, and that is in the color combination used in the main dress and what form up the "underskirts." I know that your palette is restricted by the medium (though from what I've seen as your watcher, it's growing all the time. However, I'm not sure that these three colors in combination elevate the dress from novelty item to something that more people would be beating on your door to get in the future. Maybe it's just that I'm pretty minimalist myself, but I would be looking more at doing this all in a solid purple, or in purple/white/black, or even just white/black to really dress up the design a bit. No big knock there, as I'm sure you had plenty of good reasons for doing what you did - just a personal preference.

With regards to the photo, I think this did pretty well on something that had to be hard to shoot in the environment. I'd suggest possibly having more indirect lighting in the future to help calm down the brightest spots of the reflection from the flash.

Your model looks great in the dress, by the way - she could model for me any time. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)" />
